This would have been his high school building. Someone should ask him about the cow and the third floor. Wouldn't surprise me if he was part of that practical joke. I always thought that was one reason why they have gone with a single story high school design ever since.

hey doc where was that school located at?

I may be wrong here Doc, but I believe that picture is of the high school that was behind where Koch's (or whoever owns it now) hardware is. That would be the school used prior to the current high school and last used in 1958(?).

The old, OLD high school that was up on the hill was a dark brick building and I think only had one entrance at the top of the steps going up the hill.

Since we got the answer to that one so quickly, here's another one Burg_Grad

Wrong forum I know, but who was the 1st player to score a TD on the current Pirate field?

Taxes are up and the new gym is small. Ain't it great to be in Wheelersburg. Someone really dropped the ball on the gym. We are among the last to get new schools and its a shame to see the lack of atheletic updates. I realize the state money only builds so much gym, but there are other ways. Leave it to the lack of leadership for the boondoggle.

Actually you are right on that. I never saw any of the buildings. But that was the third Wheelersburg High School and it faced Gallia Street there where Koch's Hardware and Wheelersburg Baptist sit.

Image

This is the first Wheelersburg High School and it sat behind the third high school and faced South Street. It was the one that they took the cow up the stairs--very narrow halls from what I understand. Apparently they were only about the width of a good size cow. The first and third building were connected when they added the third high school.

During WWII they collected paper for the war effort and stored it in an enclosed walkway between the (3rd) high school and the shop building--until it spontaneously combusted and had a really nice fire one day.

There ya go......
The classrooms in the back of that high school building were used as dressing rooms for the football team when Pirate Stadium was first built and used in 1956.

I went to the 1st and second grade is this building. The adjoining structure you see to the lower left (just above the car) was actually the high school gym that was used just prior to the current gym.

BTW. If this was the building they took the cow in, I doubt Pug had anything to do with it. I would say that he went to high school in the 2nd school up on the hill.

He went to the third one on Gallia street but my understanding was that the cow incident was when the third school was in existance and the first school was still attached to the back of the building. But I have to admit that the story is certainly second hand from someone who also simply heard about it.

To be honest, I have more direct memory of the dead horse incident in the early '70s. And no I was not part of it but my older siblings did come home talking about what had happened and speculating on who might have been responsible (including someone who later became a principal.) Of course that was probably the same group that managed to put the volkswagon inside the current high school building.

BigOrangeOne--I would love to hear some of your family stories about these buildings. I also would love to copy your scrapbooks sometime. It could save some hours of research over the coming year or two.
