I hope a decision is made soon. The boys have been attending Cedarville camp under Bellville and most are wondering if that is happening this year.

I have heard that Coach McClung will apply for the job. He worked with these players at the end of last season. McClung has several years of varsity coaching experience. 3 years as the Fairland Varsity boys coach before Coach Belville, 3 years as the head girls coach at Chesapeake, 2 or 3 years as the head girls coach at South Point. He also spent time under Coach Persin at Chesapeake and Coach Thacker at Fairland. McClung is currently teaching at Fairland High School. Could there have been more to Belville leaving his coaching position at Fairland than just wanting to work on getting a principals job. I have heard through the grape vine that conflicts with the girls coach could have led to him leaving, if this is true Fairland traded a District champion coach for a 8 win coach, how sad is that.

Forget about the grapevine, it is pretty common knowledge in Proctorville. There were several occasions were the boys had to practice at 6 in the morning, so Coach Belville could go scout in the evenings. The administration told Coach Belville he could either cancel practice, not scout, or go at 6 in the morning. Everything took precedent over the boys program:

1. Whatever the girls coach wanted
2. Science fair - I know Fairland had to practice at Chesapeake while preparing for the Districts due to science fair.
3. International Fair

I could go on, but like I said these things are common knowledge. From what I have been told, Coach Belville asked to have some things changed and the administration did not want to upset the girls coach or make any changes. Therefore, he decided it was just best he moved on. Plus, he is wanting to go into administration - which he was also told he should look elsewhere because spots had been promised to others already.

On a side note, I hear through the grapevine Ironton may want to bring Coach Belville on board as an assistant of some type. Anyone from Ironton hear the same thing? I know Belville and Lafon are good friends.

Well in defense of McClung. The team that Coach Belville won a district title with was far more talented than the team that McClung won 8 games with.Lets get that straight! Both guys are pretty good coaches! ;-)

Hire outside the district. It won't hurt to give it a try.

I think hiring Mike Black is the CORRECT choice. He went to Fairland.......but......has lived in dayton for many years now. He has his masters and is a good coach. He knows Fairland and wants to come home. He had been married for several years and could handle the move. He is honest and willing to work for the program. <<<<<<GIVE THIS GUY A CHANCE AT HIS SCHOOL>>>>>

Anybody know the front runner because they haven't opened the position to outsiders yet so they must have someone in mind...Mike Black may be a great fit, but if they won't let him apply what's the good in that?!?!

McClung is more qualified for this job. He has head coaching experience. Black does not have varsity head coaching experience. I find it very comforting that Black is active in his church and holds God close to his heart, but that alone does not make him a bad or good basketball coach. Although these young men may need a preacher more than they need a Coach on some nights. I honestly think someone who knows these kids and knows the parents should be put in charge of picking up the peices to the puzzle and finishing the picture that Belville and his staff started with four years ago.

Earp; I agree with you, when you say that Belville had more talent to work with then McClung did in his first stint as the head coach. McClung coached his first two teams to winning records. Both of these teams did not have alot of talent besides Chris Dinwiddie and if my memory serves me correctly his staff was very young with no coaching experience, this says alot about his coaching ability.
A head varsity coaching job is not all about rolling out the basketballs and letting the kids play. A head coach must direct scouting trips for him and his staff. Communicate with Jv, freshmen, junior high and pee wee coaches. Schedule practices, scrimmages, and games. He must also have a good working relationship with other coaches in his conference and district in order for his players to receive awards for individual accomplishments. Last but not least a head coach will typically spend the majority of the basketball season in the gym and not with his family or friends. A coaches only friends are the guys on the staff.

How did McClung get Varsity experience? He was hired for the first time awhile ago. I am not Black's agent but I know he knows basketball. He has been successful at the head coaching job in Jr. high. Went undefeated a couple of times. He was a varsity assistant at a DIV I school in Dayton and everyone knows what talents in dayton. He is the right guy for the job.

I hear the parents are alot of the teams problem, so you may be better off with a coach that doesn't know the parents or care what they think.

The only problems with this team are the same problems that all Fairland teams face: a school board with their own agenda; a disinterested school administration; and little community support. This team, under Belville's guidance, was the most successful basketball team Fairland has seen in many years. This was a close team, a close group of parents, and a close group of kids. Once again, Fairland lets another good coach go.

Every big name coach - high school and beyond - surrounds himself with good people. Not only on his coaching staff, but other coaches. The best teacher will always be the best student - so if a coach doesn't go to coaching clinics and interact with other coaches and people that know the game, he is essentially limiting himself!
I for one would rather see a coach step in that is a role model to the boys, rather than simply a coach. These players need direction in every aspect of life: mentally, emotionally, physically and academically - a good coach can help them grow in each of these areas not just the game of basketball. These boys need someone that is a strong family man with good morals and ethics...not a coach that heads down to the bar every Friday night and can't control his tongue with refs, parents, players and the community. Sounds like Mike Black has a good head on his shoulders. I for one have kids myself...having a wife and kids doesn't hold a man back, it makes him better.
