The PDT shouldn't have ran the story, they have a habbit doing that.
I feel sorry for the young man. He needs to use this to help him work
on his speed and try again next year. Coach has the right to cut who
he wants and keep who he wants. Good Luck to the Cats this season.

Brisco-

Ignert did not say that the boy was too tall but that he was tall. If he meant he was too tall, I am sure he would have spelled the key word correctly. But he said 'tall to boot' which simply means the kid was tall and the coach cut him in spite of that characteristic.

Apparently, the coach cut the young man because of speed.

Does Green have a freshman team or just Varsity/JV? If they don't have a freshman team, then the available space is more limited.

The PDT has done this a few times this year in football. Some of the biggest articles this football season about Minford were negative, yet when they were going to 6-0 at one point in the season and ranked 9 in the State you hardly read anything about them. The PDT sucks and so does their sports coverage. That's why I subscribed to the Scioto Voice. Maybe the PDT will get better since they hired a new guy but it takes more than one person. It's too bad when they seem to be more concerned about finding negative stories than focusing on the good things that happen.

I would not count on it since this is the first time since I don't know when that there was not a basketball preview in the Thanksgiving day paper.

[quote="brisco darlin"]If it was said too tall that would mean also tall.
quote]

That is one way to define 'too'. But 'too' also means extreme or excessive and would be the correct spelling for that situation.

"1. in addition; also; furthermore; moreover: young, clever, and rich too.
2. to an excessive extent or degree; beyond what is desirable, fitting, or right: too sick to travel.
3. more, as specified, than should be: too near the fire.
4. (used as an affirmative to contradict a negative statement): I am too!
5. extremely; very: She wasn't too pleased with his behavior.
—Idiom6. only too. only (def. 10). "

I only brought it up because you seemed to be misunderstanding what he had written.

And on the point, without doubt, speed is very much a part of the game. The coach knows best which particular talents are going to work best in his system and choose kids that fit.

Here's a link to another post that talks about this same situation. The PDT also had a Letter To The Editor from the parents of the boy in the same edition as the story. From what I gather from the other thread it seems the Green school board might try to force the coach to take the boy back on the team. I believe they will be without a coach if that's the case.

I gave my opinion in the other post so I won't repeat it here. There seems to be a lot more people posting here, so please give me your opinion. First, I think a coach has a right to choose his team. He's the varsity coach, put who he wants on varsity. Second, he's in charge of the program, he can say who gets cut on JV, although in the past nobody was ever cut from JV.

Here's the issue. The number of players kept on both teams combined totaled 15. That could be 10 for varsity and 5 for JV, or 8 for varsity and 7 for JV, or any other combination you would like. What if you lose one or two or more to injury, grades, sickness, or they quit. Do we play a JV game with 4 players? There is no logic to cutting anyone, period.

So, in light of the fact that your JV roster has only 6 or seven players, did it make any sense at all to cut kids because a coach doesn't think they can be a player at the varsity level? Opinions please.

If the team only has 15 kids in the whole high school program, then the coach was absolutely in the wrong for cutting the kid (unless there was some kind of discipline problem with the kid). If a kid was causing problems for the team, I would cut the kid too, but if it was just because this kid wasn't good enough and they only have 15 kids, the coach is WRONG!!!!

i hope his parents will be there when he gets "dumped" by his first girlfriend, and he does not get the grades they feel he "deserves", or hopefully they will be able to make the trip to help him in his first job interview. the new term is "helicopter parenting". i hope life always goes his way. it will be a tough fall if his parents are not there to catch him.

the letter to the editor was embarrassing to read and i don't know any of the parties involved.

It pains me "to" see "two" people arguing about the words "to" and "too." At what level have we failed in our Language Arts departments?

I highly doubt any coach would cut a player that could perform adequately for their team.Nor should a coach allow a sub par player play because of a disabilty.Birth defects do occur and do affect all aspects of their lives but these people do need to realize they have them and make the best of it.Of course it is natural for parents to try and protect their children but this will not prepare them for the real world that eventually they have to live in.

A few years back a player from Utah,I believe, had only one normal hand and a extremely deformed second hand, this did not stop him from playing high school and college basketball.By the way he was an excellent player.Adapted quite well to his disabilty.I remember watching him in tournaments,So even if a player does have a physical disabilty and can adapt and contribute to team he will be out there playing. The only person that should make this desicion is the coach.
