The official call is "back-courting".

This occurs when "all three points" meaning the ball and both feet cross over the half court line to the scrimmage area, then one of those points crosses back over to the back court.

Officials often get excited and mess this call up.

Both feet and ball (with possession) must cross half court, then into the other half of the court.

Of course, if the other team knocks the ball toward its goal (away from the offense) and it goes into the backcourt w/o other team touching it, it is not a violation.

A lot of people just think it is both feet and ball and leave out the possession part.

The rule is the ball and the player have to enter the frontcourt and the the ball and the player have to cross over the midcourt line into the backcourt for a backcourt violation to be called.

BACKCOURT
1. A player shall not be the first to touch a ball after it has been in team control in the frontcourt, if he/she or a teammate last touched or was touched by the ball in the frontcourt before it went to the backcourt.
2. While in team control in its backcourt, a player shall not cause the ball to go from backcourt to frontcourt and return to backcourt, without the ball touching a player in the frontcourt, such that he/she or a teammate is the first to touch it in the backcourt.
3. A player from the team not in control (defensive player or during a jump ball or throw in) may legally jump from his/her frontcourt, secure control of the ball with both feet off of the floor and return to the floor with one or both feet in the backcourt. The player may make a normal landing and it makes no difference wheather the first foot down is in the frontcourt or backcourt.

Once the ball and your body cross the half court line, neither the ball nor your body can go back across the halfcourt line. If one foot goes over the line, then you step back, then it is not a violation. Ball and feet both have to cross the line, then one of those points has to just touch the line, and it is backcourt violation, or over and back.

These all sound to me like a player is dribbling, is that the only way a backcourt violation can happen? How deep do we want to get here?

It can also be due to an errant pass.

Why would you exclude "officials" from answering a question about rules? Wouldn't they be the best-informed people?

The "call" I tend to question, as a spectator, is "traveling/walking".
In one game, what looks to me like 3 steps is not called; and in another, simply picking up one foot gets whistled.
I know this is changing the subject a little - but you did say "everyone answer".

Tommy Hardy is one of the most entertaining officials out there! Just ask him. As for traveling, alot of variations to that rule. for instance, on the ground you can move all around if you go to the ground after the ball, with the exception of rolling over. The list goes on and on. Good luck with this one.

Ignert, in the second instance, did the boy 'jump into the backcourt' and touch the floor THEN leap and tap the ball back in? If so, then it was an over-and-back call. If he leaped for the ball and knocked it back into the forecourt before touching the floor of the backcourt then it was not over-and-back. But I can not tell for sure from your description which occurred.

BTW-I got the card from you/your wife--thanks.

Also one thing to note in the rule is as one person once explained it "you are where you were until you get where you are going."

If the ball is in the front court with player A and player B is in the back court and teammate A passes the ball back to Player B, even if he jumps in the air and catches the ball and then lands in the front court, it is over-and-back violation. In the air, he is part of the back court until he touches down in the front court.

Same thing applies for the person standing out of bounds and a ball is thrown to them. If they jump in the air, catches it and lands inbounds, it is still an out of bounds call. This is most often seen if the ball is passed back to the inbounding player before they establish inbounds status.
