Northwest Mohawk Football - 2009

Post by Kenraken Ahta »

It is what we do now that will directly affect our success in the fall. I believe the winds of change are moving across the hills in McDermott. A Coaching Staff assembled to direct those winds. It will not be as the past 40 years. It is a new era, a new attitude and a new breed of Mohawk Football Player. GO MOHAWKS!!

They got one of the best lineman in the county in Tyson Brown, his brother Luke is a dandy tailback, but every where else I don't know? I think they return Derrick Ellis? He was an All-Soc player. Hopefully they can get in the weight room...

Go to the weight room and see how many kids are in there and how hard they are working. If good #'s and working hard they will improve, if its the same as the past you will see the same product this fall.

I had heard from one of the players that they had started up the power lifting program again which should help out a lot

Sider,

Excellent observation! These three young men you mentioned play with alot of heart and emotion, not to mention they are all three great football players. They will need to lead this 2009 team and that has to be going on right now! Although the 2008 Mohawk record was a losing one, there were things that happened to make me believe this coaching staff can turn the program around. Change. If it did not work, they looked for something that did. This is a sign of a coaching staff that gets along, communicates and has respect for one another. Coaching staffs are like players, you can have the best there is, but if they do not listen to each other and respect each others ideas and work together, then you will not be very successful when the season is over. I think the Waverly game was a tribute to the coaching staff's "looking for answers" throughout the season. The Mohawks came very close to beating a good Waverly football team. Although it was a loss, there were some positive things there to build on for 2009. Hey, maybe the tide has turned! I mean, when was the last time someone was talking about Northwest Football in January? GO MOHAWKS!!

1 or 2 wins for the mohawks. No SOC II win this year, conference is to loaded.

Would not have it any other way (conference is too loaded)! The turn out in the weight room this winter is going to tell the tale of this Mohawk season early on. If the numbers are low in the weight room and the attitude is something less than positive, then it will be as you say...........1 or 2 wins. I think not though. The coaching staff is in place that can push this team to great things. You see Runner00, If You Don't Believe You Don't Belong. GO MOHAWKS!!

I believe Coach Thompson will bring an improved team to the field this year. I'm not sure what the numbers are in the weight room but if they're good then the team will definitely be improved.

Good Luck Scott!

I believe the Mohawks are better than 3-7 this year. I see a coaching staff and a group of players that are willing to work hard and make the adjustments to win. But it all hinges on the weight room activity. You can have a talented group of coaches and players, but if they are not in that weight room in the winter months lifting with passion, then your season will be mediocre at best. GO MOHAWKS!!

What's the schedule look like this year besides the typical SOC II games against: West, Wheelersburg, Waverly, Valley, and Minford?

If they play small schools like Notre Dame, Green, and Symmes Valley they would have a chance to win those. I don't think they could get East or Piketon though if those teams are on the schedule so I'd say 3-7 for next year IF these are their opponents. They will still be a year away from competing in the SOC II although I really do hope that Coach Thompson does well.

Northwest just needs some commitment to football, something they have lacked in the past. Not just by the players, but the Coaches, Athletic Director and the School. It would be a good if the Athletic Directod(Frantz I think it is) could schedule some schools like Huntington, Unioto, Green (again), to get wins (maybe 3-5 a season) and get interest in football up. This could lead to building a program. Also I think some work needs to be done next year to establish a little better offense system. It seemed when we played them that there was no play action, double handoffs, option, or anything to catch the defense off-guard. And I understand that its hard to do anything when the line doesn't get a push. Lets hope they finally get something going

First off, i dont mean to bash my mcdermott neighbors, but you guys do NOT have a good team coming up. with that said, you have some great athletes and good players (such as the brown bros), but what's new? Northwest always has talent, they just never win. you might say "oh its because of the low numbers in the weight room" but thats because of a lack of determination and heart. therefore, i predict no change whatsoever in northwest's football success, no conference W's for the mohawks (indians are already on the warpath for u guys), and no out of conference victories. any SOC 1 team that northwest plays next year is going to dominate the field against them

oh yea, and kenraken, i have personally witnessed your powerlifting at the symmes valley bench & deadlift meet. unimpressive.
your light & midweights may have been working, but they are some of the weakest boys ive seen. all of your strength (scores) come from your big, heavy, thick, unlimited (255lb+) linemen who are too slow on the field to block any of their opponents.
Verdict: coach needs to be working on the line's speed and agility, beef up your skilled players or else you guys are GOING to be in for a rude awakening after all of your local hype and that only leads to another decade and a half at least of low-hanging mohawk heads

It would be nice to see this program get turned around. Looks like they may be going in the right direction.

Well if you ask me we have a really good team coming up... the freshman this year lost 1 game in the 8'th grade last year----they beat burg, beat valley, beat oak hill, beat waverly pretty bad---and the 8'th grade this year only lost 2 games.....So I would say they are a pretty good class coming in...and before anyone says well that's just jr. high..... i'll tell you winning starts somewhere and they won plain and simple!

Thats right it does start somewhere, and winners continue to push themselves harder. I say watch
and see in a few years. Good luck and smack your neighbors in the mouth.
