Shawn Myrick played at the University of Cincinnati after graduating in '94.
Kyle Sherman received a full scholarship to Morehead State after playing in the early 90's.
Dustin Grutza had a full ride at Cincinnati for football but also was very good high school basketball player for the '03 State Champion Royals and '04 State Runners-up.
Jarrod Litzinger was playing for Kelly Wells at Union College (KY) I believe.

Other names slip my mind at this time but I know they have had others who were all-state selections as well.

I guess if we're talking all college level then and not just the bigger D1 more heard about/NCAA involved schools we could add to the list for the SHL
Brett and Brian Justice - Capitol University
Kim Danner, Libby Stephenson - played at the college level
I'm certain there are many others from other SHL schools
Sparky...its not about the ruffling of feathers, as I've said before, we all should fully expect to get on her and have people disagree with this, that's fine. But for people to continually try and dissect your comments to make them something they want them to say because they have their own personal bias or issue with something is just very childlike and quite honestly, pathetic. I am wrong for continuing to banter with it though.

OK, you are right. You didn't mean anything when you stated "I don't see where it did older Setty any favors"...isn't he at Maysville CC now?

What did you mean then????????????????????????????????

Did this sound like a "jab" or a "slam" to anyone else?

I don't have a dog in the fight, but it seems like you might be reading more into this bucknut than is really there. I went back and read the posts and I don't think going to community college is a dis, I think its just stating a fact that the exposure did not net the Setty boy a fullride to a four year school. Unless he did receive one and that comment isn't true... :? I don't know all the details I'm just going by what's posted on here.

Just seems like this thread has veered off course and become more about slammin junkie than discussing the topic. Let's get past this!

He did receive a full ride (5 year)scholarship. He was redshirted this year and then had some academic problems (probably attendance). His coach advised him to attend a community college to raise his GPA and said that his scholarship would be waiting for him if he chooses to return.

For the last time....Obviously this thread has become about the theory that going to Mason County gets a kid more exposure and in turn will result in more opportunities/offers etc.....The point I was trying to make was this: This kids is a very very good player so assuming this exposure theory is correct.... I would think he would be at a UK or a school of that caliber and he isn't. I don't know why he made the decisions he made, that is irrevelent. My OPINION is just that he could have gone to a Georgetown or an OU or a RIO or a Morehead or a community college had he stayed at Peebles too, no doubt so besides the championship, I don't see where the move to Mason county resulted in anything bigger.

It's a legitimate argument junkie. But I think its better for a kid to be part of a state championship caliber program and have the opportunity to win something so special in high school and have that experience to remember for the rest of his life. Those are memories he wouldn't have at Peebles, unfortunately.

Junkie,
Sorry but your the one that got this thread off the original topic, as you can see it was you that mentioned "exposure". And if anyone is being "childish" maybe it's you.

Off the original topic or not.The last time I checked the circumfrance of the rims in Ky. are the same as in Ohio.A player puts it in the hole enough the scouts will definately find you.I don't see any NBA players in your listings, fortunately the SHL produced Brian Grant who had a stellar NBA career.

an awful lot of touchy people on this topic. i can't believe i am supporting shl junkie, but even if he was making a crack about community college it is a public forum and he is definitely a peebles advocate. and yes i do believe he was taking a shot with that statement as he was defending the fact that backwood shl kids can get to a community college.
does maysville community college play southern state? the shl has four or five kids playing there and i am sure that barnett or cumberland from hillsboro could play at the naia or d3 level and possibly d2. d3 is just so expensive.

Sparky
We know it was a "shot" especially since Maysville Community College doesn't have sports.

I wouldn't have known that as Im not a Kentucky expert.
Anyway back to the topic of Peebles Talent....even though it's different sports, Judd Johnson back in 84 was drafted by the Atlanta Braves and Chad Wilson went to UC to play golf. I'm sure a lot of posters could come up with a lot of SHL'ers out there who have gone on to play different sports at the college level.
Back to the very beginning if anyone even can remember the original topic.....it would have been great if this group at Peebles had been able to stay together. I believe the sky would've been the limit. We can say woulda shoulda coulda all day but theres no doubt, it sure would have been fun!!!

I agree its an exciting time for Peebles basketball. I'm really proud of our boys right now. Looking forward to tournament. There is so much talent coming up its really enjoyable to watch. Peebles 8th grade team has played together since they were little guys and they have really become a force. A lot of talent moving up next year!! Arey, Crothers, McAdow to name a few. Not to mention the jr high girls team has some great up and coming players, Swayne, Brown, Pell & Wallace. Little Dodridge girl moves up next year. When they get into highschool...look out!

I believe there are two ways to get attention/exposure playing in the SHL and I think all of the players mentioned (Copas,Cluxton, Grant, etc) fit into one of the categories. #1 - You have to win, win, win! Not just league's but get to State or at least regionals with extremely good record. #2 - You have to be physically gifted or stand out physically (size, height, etc). If you dont fit under these two categories it is almost impossible to get much attention playing in the SHL. If you are undersized or dont stand out physically you will always have tough time. Sure, there will be Div 3 offers with no guarantees and you will be paying $$$. I truly believe a 6'2 kid could average a triple double on a 500 team and only get Div 3 and maybe a few NAIA offers. Any legitimate player who is not playing AAU ball is really hurting themselves. Unfortunately, and I could be wrong, but I dont think a lot of SHL kids play AAU ball. For example, does Unger?

Man I hate to hear that. Sounds like he was on the right path. I hope he gets back on track. It happens sometimes to kids when they get to college. What school did he get a full-ride to? In this day and time, getting college paid for is the way to go especially if you get to do something you love while you're at it!!

Best of luck to him, he is a Peebles native and I hope he excells in life!

jimmy, the Justice boy has drawn a lot of attention and I've personally seen scouts at our ballgames. Justice put up some numbers and got people fired up and everyone started to come and watch, once they saw the team as a whole they were hooked!!! This is a really good ball club! Fun to watch!

I personally have a friend that is an assistant at Ohio University D1 MAC. I have another one that is an assistant at Rio Grande University NAIA. And another friend who is an assistant at Columbus State, JUCO. I have been on a recruiting trip or two with the D1 coach. We all talk basketball a lot. I can tell you, each is very aware of the good players in all of Ohio. The most difficult thing for all of them is realizing what kids are realistically gettable. Obviously OU isn't looking at the same players as KY, NC, Duke and so on. Such as Rio is not looking at the same players as OU. These guys throw high school players names around like crazy. They know what league they are in and can tell grand parents names if it is a player they think they can get. The mediocre players are the ones that might slip through the cracks. And that is the coaches job to get tapes out and some recognition if the kid can truly play on the next level. Word spreads quickly when the kid is the total package. Size, athleticism and can play. The difference between most the players in SE Ohio is the first two. We have some kids with tons of skill, but can they run, jump and guard the same skill level but giving up 4" in size? This is a great post when it stays on topic.
