I've watched over 35 years of basketball in that gym and even though alot of visitors called it a "crackerbox", as far as home court advantage, I wouldn't have traded it for any other gym. I would bet good money that the closeness of the fans to the floor and the student section being right on the action (and at the visitors end for the 2nd half of every ballgame) has caused a more than a few free throw's to be missed late in some close games.

I know they had a thread awhile back asking what everyone thought was the best game they have ever watched in the gym, I don't know about best game, but the best finish I've ever seen in a game there was in the Burg-Portsmouth game of 2002, in Burleson's Senior year. He received the outlet pass after a missed Trojan FT, down by one and went the length of the court and dunked the ball for the game winning points. Man, what a finish.

Still have fond memories of Brad Walke draining jumper after jumper in that gym. RIP buddy.

Good luck Pirates this Friday and good luck and thanks to the Seniors. Win this game for all of the players, boys and girls, that have played in the "crackerbox" gym over the last 50 years, but most of all win it for yourself. To be able to say that you played the last game ever in that gym is something you will be able to tell your grandkids someday.

Doc, or someone. Does anyone know the Burg's winning percentage at home over the history of the gym? I know they had some lean years early on, but in the 35 years I've been watching the Burg, they've only had 4 losing season and only two of they years did they not win 10 or more games

i know this is not there home game record but if i added it up right from the book they had at the 2 games for the final four reuinion comin into this season there overall record is 752-287 durin the time in the current gym.

They announced at the Valley game that they had made up a special program honoring the last game. Only 500 copies will be handed out; better get there early if you want one.

Just for interest, I don't know how many former Pirates are on here, but how many people would be interested in purchasing a piece of the floor if they were able to cut it up in about 1ftx1ft squares. I know this has been done at other schools/universities and seems it could be a good fundraiser for the program.

SOCfan Sounds about right. I hate to admit it but in the current book I have typed up, two of those years are missing. I don't really count them as missing scores though because Kim Barrick is suppose to get those for me from the scorebooks. Her life has been hectic lately and I haven't wanted to bother her again. Those seasons happened to fall between the time when I kept paper records and the time I was changing to 100% computer. The information is somewhere among my stuff but...

Madd dog-many of your records are not correct.

I have my scrapbooks from the 2000, '01, and '02 seasons. If I could get any information together for you, let me know. I would be glad to help.

They are planning on correcting them in next year's program. They have been publishing a list that no one had checked for accuracy in a long time. I don't know who put it together or what was their resources but it turned out that none of the records were correct on the list from 1958 until about 1980. Most of the time they simply left out the tournament games but there were years like the 1963-64 where they left out five wins from the regular season.

Pre-1958, I have not checked so those records have to be taken with a grain of salt until someone does.

Final score

Burg 71 SW 40

The last game in the gym results in yet another sole SOC championship for the Pirates.

Congratulations Pirates on the SOC Championship and now it is on to the second season and as the two time defending regional champs, everyone will be gunning for them.

Kyle Phipps shot was about 3/4 of the floor. Nice hit. It is the third such shot of half court or better this year. Two boys, one girl shots.

It was also nice to see what could be the starting 5 in the game the last few minutes. It will be hard losing all the experience of the seniors, but that group of Freshmen and Sophomores will be tough the next couple years as well!

Great win for the Pirates tonight. They came out strong to start the game and never looked back. Opening up the second half on a 13-0 run didn't hurt either. I think Webster got their first basket of the 3rd quarter at right around the 3 minute mark.

It was also nice to be a part of the history of the school by attending the last game in the "Palace" as Bama Mike calls it being in the group photo takem of the crowd on the floor after the game. I've seen a lot of great games in that gym since my family moved here in 1971. I wonder if someone could ever figure out the won/lost record for the Burg in that gym. I'm sure it would be very impressive.

Congrats to the seniors on their fine careers as Pirates and continued success into the tourney and into their college careers. It's been a blast watching you guys over the past several years, whether it was on the hardwood, the gridiron, or the diamond. Thanks guys!!!!
