I never done cleans or snatches until college. They take some getting used to, but they are probably the number one lifts that an athlete can do IF DONE CORRECTLY. ESPECIALLY for football.
Yes, they are stressful on the wrists, but look at it this way. Squats are not very good for your back, but to strengthen your legs, what do you do?
Point is, you won't know how beneficial doing cleans and snatches are until you have actually done them. Best lift for an athlete IMO.

Yes cleans are good for football. Like it has been said numerous times in here any exercise down improperly can be bad for you. The positives far outweight the negatives when doing cleans. Not only are you getting stronger, but you are getting more explosive in your movements which will help when you are coming off the ball for a block. The more explosive you are the harder and faster you can hit and go.
