Blue Devils trip River Valley
Host Gallipolis Gallia Academy High School had two big scoring spurts in the first and second halves Wednesday night at the University of Rio Grande’s Newt Oliver Arena in Lyne Center to post a 61-49 non-conference victory over the River Valley Raiders.
Coach Chris Stout’s lads grabbed a 6-2 lead during the first three and one-half minutes of play before GAHS went on a 12-0 run from 4:26 left in the first stanza until 3:47 left in the half to take a 14-6 advantage. Gallipolis led 9-6 after one period and 21-13 at the halftime break.
Big Zak Deel’s layup opened second half scoring to cut the Blue Devils lead to 21-15. Following goal exchanges by Kyle Mitchell, Cody Smith, and John Troester, GAHS led 25-18.
Kyle Mitchell made it 27-18, then Deel’s freebie cut it back to 27-19. Quinton Nibert’s layup (3:56) and a layup by Deel made it 29-21 with 3:41 remaining in the third period.
Nibert, Ethan Moore, Kyle Mitchell and Chris Armstrong hit goals during the final 1:41 of the period (with Clayton Curnette’s trey at the 1:19 mark) gave GAHS a 42-24 advantage going into the final period.
Goals by Nick Mitchell, Kyle Mitchell made it 47-24. Jared Golden and Smith exchanged goals to make it 49-26 with 6:16 remaining in the game. The Raiders caught fire and outscored GAHS 18-2 over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to seven points, 51-44, with 3:01 left to play. Leading the onslaught were Smith and Curnette.
Armstrong and Kyle Mitchell’s layups halted the comeback bid with 2:27 and 1:30 to go. The Blue Devils then wrapped up the victory at the foul line during the final minutes of play with Nibert’s two charity tosses and Beau Whaley’s five of six freebies.
Gallipolis connected on 24 of 48 field goal attempts for 50 percent. GAHS was nine of 14 at the line for 62.4 percent. Gallipolis had 10 personal fouls, 28 rebounds, five each by Whaley and Kyle Mitchell. GAHS had 15 turnovers.
Kyle Mitchell’s 26 points led all scorers. Nibert added 11, Moore seven, Armstrong six and Whaley five for the Blue Devils.
River Valley canned 17 of 42 field goal attempts for 40.4 percent. The Raiders were six of eight at the foul line (75 percent) and had 12 personal fouls. RVHS had 19 rebounds, seven by Deel. The Raiders had 19 turnovers.
Coach Jim Osborne’s Blue Devils improved to 5-7 on the year. River Valley dropped to 3-8. The Blue Devils will travel to Zanesville Friday for another Southeastern Ohio League game. The reserve battle begins at 6 p.m. River Valley travels to Meigs Saturday for a non-league matchup with the preliminary battle slated for 6 p.m.
In Wednesday’s freshman game at URG, Gallipolis jumped out in front 15-0 enroute to a 61-39 victory. The GAHS yearlings improved to 5-8 overall. River Valley dropped to 0-5.
Gallipolis led 18-9, 32-18 and 47-27 at the quartermarks. Joel Johnston paced GAHS with 17 points. Stephen Atkins added 12 and Bryce Amos 11. Nick Saunders chipped in with nine points and Drew Young added seven. For River Valley, Patrick Williams was high with 11 points. Aaron Harrison added 10 and Derek Flint tallied eight.
In the JV game, GAHS led 11-5, 24-9 and 33-16 at the quartermarks to post a 43-25 triumph. The Blue Imps improved to 9-3 overall. River Valley dropped to 2-7.
Corey Eberhard led GAHS with 13 points. Jordan Cornwell added seven, Tyler Eastman and Cody Billings six each and Austin Wilson five for the winners. Tyler Noble paced River Valley with seven points. Kyle Bryant added six.

Don't have official rebounds, turnovers, assists and steals...Was tired afterr last night's tripleheader, hit the sack and missed phone call from coaches.
