Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
If you want to take the politics out...look at Tobias's suggestions on the tournament seeding topic he posted.

Portsmouth starting five changes from game to game.
It could be:
Dion McKinley 6-5
Tre Underwood 6-4
Forrest Johnson 6-2
Tory Horne 6-1
Wayne Evans 6-0
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
obviously if peebles is going to get to columbus they are going to have beat some very good teams along the way, might as well get started early. when was the last time peebles made it to the regionals? and how many times? which shl school has the most regional appearances?

I agree, but it all goes back to the Jackson sectional being so loaded this year. If Athens would've been loaded, no worries. The Indians can win all of these matchups, but it's a very tough road.
No, it goes down to the Jackson sectional being so political. No way in Hedes that portsmouth is the number 5 team in this sectional. They are no worse than #3. Peebles got hosed by the OVC and the SOC. Neither Oak Hill or Chesapeake wanted to play the Trojans in the tourney.
It's not uncommon for the number one seed to get a tough draw. It happened to North Adam last year too. It's the way the system works. Just keep getting on hear and complaining about so kids have a built in excuse.

Whoa-whoa-whoa...I'm not complaining, no excuses. We've got a tough draw, and Peebles can handle it. I've just pointed out that The 2 and 3 seeds at Waverly have an easier time than us, because so many great teams are playing out of Jackson. North Adams had a very tough run last year, too...I just think it's weird that for 2 years in a row the #1 seed has a harder line to tow than lower seeds. Just the way it worked out.
As to sparky's question, Peebles last got to the regional in 1984, with quite a few last-second district final losses in between (thanks, Wheelersburg). SHL team with most regional appearances? North Adams has had 3, Peebles has had 2, Manchester went to state in 1928, and after that I'm fuzzy. Lynchburg went to state in 1993, and of course Eastern went (2001?)...I don't know how many times these teams have gone that far, though. I'm not sure about Ripley, Whiteoak, or Fairfield.
Anyone? Anyone?

Whiteoak went to state a while back but thats about all I know.
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
Whiteoak went to the regionals in 2000, 2002 and 2003.....and were completely absolutely the most screwed ever in 2005 in the district finals or that would've been #4.
Were Final 4 in 2002 (had 11 point lead at the half) and were Elite 8 the following year even after graduating 4 of 5 starters from the final 4 team and 5 of the 7 man rotation...one of the best coaching jobs (Pat Hines) and execution by the players I've ever seen.

very impressive
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
I have no dog in the seeding argument but may i ask a ? These games are so spread out and if your the best team in the state shouldnt you be able to beat anyone in your District/sectional/regional on any given night instead of saying well we played a better team than you 3 nights ago and were tired is why we lost.

I'd agree it would work that way on paper, but ask anyone who's ever had a successful tournament run and they'll tell you luck is always a big part of any run.
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
I know that Johnson and Horne can flat out play.I dont know much more about Portsmouth's other starters
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
luck is definitely a major factor. and the luck of the draw can be important as well, as match ups are very important. some teams don't match up well with others as far as style of play, size of opponents, injuries, and experience of opponents. all of these factors are what makes the tournament so much fun to follow. when a team gets on a roll more and more fans jump on the bandwagon. you will start seeing fans that you haven't seen for years.

Fo Jo and Horne are great. But, I think what makes this team so dangerous is the presence of sophmore stud Dion McKinley. He gives them a force in the post and he even steps out for the mid range game or the 3 pointer. He also is a rebound machine.
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
FalcoFan, Did Valley and Portsmouth play in the regular season? By the way, I dont like the sounds of that rebounding machine quote.
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
didn't portsmouth lose a very good player to wheelersburg? i wonder if that kid wishes he hadn't made that move?
Re: Peebles Tourney Draw
I like the two other Portsmouth players that just seem to do what is needed...Evans and ??? Both are about 6'0,,,,sleak and smooth.
McKinley and Underwood have good size and can both be quite the presence. Dion killed us on the outside in game 2.

No. They didn't play in the regular season. What is scary though is the fact that Tre Underwood might be just as good as McKinley on the boards.

He was a good player. Hopefully he is doing well at the Burg.

You might be talking about London Malone. Or Isiah Reeves.
