What's the more impressive streak: VC varsity or 7th Grade?

Post by Shooter McGavin »

The Varsity Boys have went 3 consecutive seasons undefeated in the TVC. The 7th grade boys have won every game over the last two seasons. With two masterminds at the helm of each respective program, which streak is more impressive? Combs has had a few players for more than one year. Caudill has to start from scratch each year. The edge has to go to Russ. Thoughts?

The praise should go to Bob Grillo and the youth program he has built in VC.

Right on!!!!!!!

Bob has had that program for over 15 years. with help from a lot of good coaches. I had posted previously about the vikings that went undefeated. They were all coached by Kenny Wright and he had them running the motion offense fluently in the the 4th grade. I know I reffed a lot of games on saturday!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing against combs> but Bob started this program years ago and Combs and Caudill are just starting to reap the benefits of all their hard work.!!!!!!

If the TVC Ohio was a tougher league I would maybe go with the varsity, so I have to go with the 7th grade coach that gets dealt a new hand every year.

The players are the ones that are impressive. The program is there - little league, jr high, successful high school program - but it is nothing without kids that are willing to work hard during the season as well as the off season. These kids look at the success at the high school and are motivated to work hard to be a part of that program. The current 7th graders have played against each other for many different coaches in the county league since the 3rd grade. Some of them continued playing together after each county season as a travel team. They love the game. I can think of many people who provide the opportunity-but its the kids that take that opportunity and turn it into something special.

I guess to answer the question, I think they are both impressive streaks because of the kids involved.

I want to say Bob Grillo is the one to praise for the Vikings good fortunes on the hardwood the last few years. Kenny Wright, Bryan Owings, Bub Remy, Tim Smallwood, and all the other biddy league coaches over the years deserve a lot of credit too. It is easier to just have to teach different defenses and offenses then starting from scratch. These boys come to seventh grade knowing all the fundementals of basketball!
It's not easy to go undefeated, regardless how good your players are. The coach must create the right chemistry at the correct time game in and game out.

Coach Comb's feats have to be more impressive because of the better coaching at the varisty level. I have had games where I had to make adjusments to win, and had games that the opposing coach never makes adjusments at all. So this is not comparing apples to apples. Comb's job is a lot tougher, so therefore his run is more impressive. Good luck in the tourney coach.
Your friend.

Very true! Coach Caudill deserves a lot of credit for being able to accomplish this the last two seasons.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here, Viked Man. Coach Combs gets to have players returning each year that already know his system. Coach Caudill gets brand new players each year that have to be taught his system. Remember, not even the great John Royster was able to take a team undefeated during his days of coaching junior high teams. Do not sell yourself short. What you have accomplished is very impressive.

I cant believe the question is even being asked on here but I'll bite. The VARSITY streak is much more of an accomplishment than a 7th grade team IMO.

Both are very impressive, but one may lead to the other. A good 7th grade coach is very valuable and it could be a lot of the reason why the varsity is having so much success. Just my humble opinion.

There both impressive feats and good for Vinton County basketball.
As far as the 7th graders (of old) that play varsity now: Jake sr, Andy, Ethan, Dyl, Steven, Taylor (jr's) Levi, and Adam soph's one needs to bring Frank Guthrie into the equation.
He coached these boys in 7th grade, and coached Levi and Adam in 8th grade also.
The entire Vikings boys coaching staff does a good job. I believe that they all would support each others contributions to the current success the Viking basketball teams are having.
Good luck Sat. Coach Combs, we want to be seeing the green of the Convo again!

I just wish John Royster was still coaching. Cant blame him for taking some time off though.

Rumor is that John may be coming back in some capacity.

After all the discussion and debating, I believe that we can all agree that there have been many, many folks who have had their own part in the success of these programs. As far as compairing the varsity to the seventh grade, that is an unfair compairison to both programs. It might be the same sport, but its still comparing apples to oranges. Since I have only lived in Vinton County for the past 4 years, I can only comment on what Ive seen in recent history. In that time, the vast majority of the VC community has supported all of these programs with alot of heart.
