2023 Player Spotlight/interview with Cody Risner from Wheelersburg High School

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Cody Risner

Wheelersburg High School

Positions played DE/TE

Class 2024

What does it take to not only participate in three sports but to be very good at all three and keep your grades up?

To be in all three I really just keep my head down do my work in school and take sports one step at a time working to the next level

What are your personal goals as well as the big goals you have set for the team?

My personal goal is to leave my mark not just from an athletic standpoint but as an overall player. I want us to make the trip to Canton and bring home a state champion trophy.

Do you believe playing tough schools out of the Wheelersburg area helps prepare you better for the playoffs compared to those teams who are facing teams only from their immediate area?

Yes. I am very happy with our schedule I think having tough competition early before playoffs will get teams more ready for what’s ahead.

What are you looking forward to the most this season?

I really just can’t wait to get on the other side of the ball on defense and go all out.

Of the four losses the Pirates had last season, which one shocked you the most?

The one that shocked me the most would be against West. It was a hard-fought game but I was sure we would come out on top. What it boiled down to was a few minor errors on both sides of the ball.

Who was the best player you guys faced last season, along with the team he played for?

If I were to choose it would be Ryan Sissle. He put his head down and played his hardest every snap no matter what he was doing. West Senators

Who has been the best team you guys have gone up against, along with the things that made them so good?

The best team I think we have played would be Harvest Prep the last two years they’ve stopped us in the playoffs

Of all of the road games you have played in, which stadium had the best atmosphere, along with the things that made it so good?

McNicholas I believe was a Dll catholic school about 2 hours away that we took home a victory. The stands had mostly all of our fans, coming from our small town to support their Pirates.

Tight end or defensive end Which one do you feel you are better at?

Definitely DE. I picked up the ropes on TE last year because we needed somebody to fill in that position. I’m much more comfortable on the line getting my hands on and playing aggressively.

Can you share a few of the schools that have shown interest in you?

I have a few schools up north that have contacted me some schools in Kentucky but what I think would get me into the bigger schools is my long snapping. Right now I’m getting the ball back there in a nice spiral in ab .7 seconds.

What are your thoughts on 16 teams per region qualifying for the playoffs?

I like it more competition.

Where should the state finals be held?

They should be held either in Canton or at Ohio State where they used to be

As a player, what are your thoughts on playing games on Thursday and Saturday?

Personally, I don’t think it would feel right. Ever since I was little I’ve thought about getting under those lights on a Friday night

Where is the best local place to grab a bite?

I would have to say the Ribber owned by The Maults. Best steaks in the Midwest.

Who is your favorite and least favorite college team?

I would say the Buckeyes. And since I’m an Ohio State fan I gotta hate Michigan.

What is your favorite class or subject?

History is what fascinates me the most

His dad was a fantastic football player. Not very big (his nickname was Bones) but could hit like a Mack Truck.

Best of luck to this young man!
